Chapter Nine

Diego hated leaving Olivia by herself, but she had promised to lock the slide bolt to the door and not answer for anyone. With a full cable package on the television, some magazines and books he’d picked up at the hotel shop, and plenty of food they had ordered up with lunch, he hoped she’d find something to occupy her time until he returned.

He’d donned his uniform from the night before, which was only a little worse for wear, and arrived at the station just after the graveyard shift went on patrol.

Christopher and Alexander were nowhere to be found, but Jaxon was working overtime, and Diego strode up and down the sparse, industrial tile hallways searching for him. He didn’t find Jaxon as soon as he liked.

Instead, Internal Affairs corner him in the hall, wearing the skin of Detective Andre Malone. Sniffing around again. It was like he was looking to make trouble for the LVPD cops, the H-Squad in particular, and he was hated for it.

“Orion, I heard you had a problem with some drug dealers on the west side. Did the girl get her medical care?”

Diego leveled a hard gaze at the rat of a man. Angels well understood the idea of honor in brotherhood — heck, they all but invented it. Andre had no honor to speak of. He respected no brotherhood.

“She got the care she needed. She’s safe now, so the night ended well.”

The worst part of being an Angel and a cop — trying to tell the truth when lying would better serve, especially to I.A., Diego found it better stay as close to the truth as possible. If it wasn’t the truth, then he left it out completely. That was the best way to deal with IA, in Diego’s opinion.

“Uh-huh. And the drug lord you let escape? Any follow up on that mistake?”

Diego ground his jaw. There it was. Andre was suggesting Diego had been derelict in his duty, choosing to aid the victim rather than give chase.

Sometimes, only a strong curse was enough to describe a person. Right now, Andre was one of those people.

“Considering the track record some cops have with a chase that ended badly, I would have thought you’d congratulate me on a job well done.”

Diego didn’t give him a chance to answer. Jaxon stepped into the break room, and Diego pushed past I.A. to reach him.

“We aren’t done, Orion!” Andre hollered down the hall. Orion almost flipped him the bird. Almost.

I.A. and their vendettas against cops had started for the Halo Squad shortly after Rift Angels started working with LVPD. The higher-ups in the Chief’s office did a fair job of keeping I.A. in the dark about the H-Squad. Andre would love to take one of them down, so the Rift Angels kept their distance from Andre and his goons, as much as possible.

“Fisher!” Diego called to him. Jaxon poured a tall thermos of coffee, getting caffeinated for a busy Saturday night in Vegas.

“Orion, brother. What brings you in on your night off? Looking for O.
